The importance of having a domain name.

On May 2019 Instagram and Facebook crashed and it set off a global panic among its 100’s of million users. For you artisans our there that post their content on social media, especially if you sell your creative
work on these and other platforms it affected you and might have
even made you panic. Thoughts of loss of potential sales, inquiries of
your item, etc. sat in your mind. If you rely solely on social media
platforms as a place to sell then the that day in May put you in a
paranoid state. Meanwhile I was fine. Was I concerned? Absolutely
but never was I concerned to the point where I felt at a loss. Why?
Because I don’t solely depend on social media platforms as a place to
promote and sell because of such events like that crash that happened.

Where to register a domain name

There are many domain websites that offer domain name services but the one that I use and that is popular is godaddy.com. For as little as $2.99 a year (they will require you to sign up for a minimum of 2 years plus fees which will come up to a total of about $17 but still not that bad) you can have your own i.e “yourname.com” address. No matter how much you may be struggling financially trust me, you can afford this. I’m sure you as the reader spend more on take out or etc at any given time during the week.

There are also plenty of free website hosts where you can build your own website.
Spotify.com, Homestead.com, Wix.com and Weebly are some just to name a few . Trust me I’m no
webmaster but most of these web hosts I mentioned are very user friendly.
Now the only problem with using free web hosts is that you’re a slave
to using a domain name you choose that will incorporate with the
name of the web host. For example, if you chose the name
“SusanSilkyBeads” because your using a free web host most likely
you’re full url of your website would be something like
“http://www.susansilkybeads.homestead.com”.

Now I am sure I don’t have to tell you how lengthy that web address is. Picture you meet someone that is interested in your business and you have to verbally tell them what your web address is. Even if you have it on a business card the person would still have to type it in the search bar. They might get discouraged on the lengthiness of the link. Also not to mention that it a lengthy link is not as easy to remember as a shorter one like (selfless plug here.. lol) www.beadbydez.com

This is why I want to emphasize to register your own custom domain name. With that you will not be a slave to using part of the name of the webhost that you have registered with ie. www.mydomainname/homestead.com.  As you see by that example its lengthy and not memorable. It doesn’t roll of the tongue and the user will be frustrated typing that into a search engine or history bar.

Make it count

When coming up with a domain name treat it as if your getting a tattoo. It’s gonna be related to your business so of course you want to choose a name close to it or exactly it. Make sure its basic but not boring so make it count. Make it memorable but not too cliche’. When you register the name your choosing for the domain website that you will register the name at will let you know the availability of the name and the extension. (i.e .com, .net, .org, etc)

You will breathe a little easier when you have your own custom domain. Make a memorable and a name that easily rolls of the tongue. Place it in your social media platforms, business cards and products. Good Luck!

Hey Dez,

How are you? Much success your way 🙂
Just read through your blog. Really appreciate the info on websites & domain names. This is such great advice. When I started my social media accounts I never considered I would have a business one day or write a book. So I’m looking at domain names & getting a website or two for my business & life. I’m a TC transaction coordinator for real estate. About to step out on my own for more business.
Have a great day.
