How to solve a creators block

As a beader and creator of handmade jewelry I fall into a creative block often especially when you have been making jewelry since 2014. Various stones, shapes and sizes. Custom orders, bracelets, earrings, necklaces. Charms, pendants, leather bracelets, metal bracelets, you name it I have done it. So there are times when I have to figure out what to do when I am not sure how to execute my next creation. Then it hits me. How do I solve my creators block!

Back to the drawing board

This is what I like to call recycle. It has worked for me and I guarantee it can work for you. As a artisan you probably at the point where you have created 100’s of handmade products. Especially if you have been in business as long as I if not long. Even if you have not created much you may still have fallen into a creative block. The following can still apply to you.

Back to the drawing board is a phrase used to indicate that an idea, plan, or proposal has been unsuccessful and that a new one must be devised. In this case a plan has not been drawn up yet. Thus, a new one must be devised. So how can this be done? You must recycle.

Recycle

I can honestly say I sell less pieces that I have created. My ratio of pieces sold vs the ones I still have sitting in my bin is probably like 35/65. But this is a opportunity to recycle your unsold goods. That item that you have not sold and is sitting in your bin or etc may need a new look. Maybe it’s simply not appealing to your audience. Perhaps the color(s) isn’t right. Could it be too big, or too small? When it comes to jewelry for example it could be a matter of wrong color for the season. Some pieces like white, gold or bright colors tend to attract potential customers for the summer. Whatever it maybe go through your unsold items and just give it a second look. It may just need a retouch. Try re-selling it and see what happens.
